About me

Hi, I'm Steffi (she/her), a sex counselor based in Hamburg. In my practice in Harvestehude and online, I support individuals, couples and people in alternative relationship structures on their journey toward a more fulfilling sex life.

My path to sex counseling

The interplay of sexuality, bodies and relationships, on both a personal and a societal level, has been on my mind for quite some time. For years, I've been devouring every book and podcast on the subject I can get my hands on. At the same time, it took me a little while to work up the courage to pursue it professionally as well, since my background is in IT, where I still work today. Perhaps that's exactly why my interest has been so strong: throughout my working life, the analytical, head-centered side of things was often given far more room than my body and my emotions. I wanted to change that and reclaim something vital: a connection to myself as an embodied being.

Eventually, I heard someone on a podcast talk about their work as a sex counselor, and I was immediately taken with the idea of supporting other people in their own growth. For my training, I specifically looked for a program that includes the body as the foundation of sexuality, and finally found it at the SoHam Institut. There, my teacher Susanna-Sitari Rescio brings together an immense wealth of knowledge from more than 20 years of hands-on work with clients, a scientific grounding as a sexologist and a deep passion for tantra and mindfulness. So during the training, we not only got to soak up a great deal of her knowledge, but also to experience and learn to guide body exercises, affectionately called “body plays”.

Since completing my training, I've been working part-time as a sex counselor for individuals, couples and all relationship types. My practice in beautiful Hamburg-Harvestehude is open every Friday; on other days, I offer sessions online.

My approach & values

An open, accepting attitude toward my clients is the foundation of my work. Human sexuality is incredibly diverse, but sadly, rigid societal scripts have left many people with a rather narrow idea of what sexuality is supposed to look like, which is why they often ask themselves: “Am I normal?” I take these worries seriously, while lovingly affirming the people who come to me both in who they are and in the changes they wish to make.

In our sessions, we talk about the deeper causes behind dissatisfaction or something supposedly “not working” when it comes to sex, and explore which facets of sexuality and intimacy feel most right at the moment. Body-centered exercises help us along the way by training mindfulness and bringing us back to where it all actually happens: the body itself. Of course, all of this always takes place fully clothed, without any touch and only with explicit consent.

In my work, it's important to me to see the person in front of me within their context. For me, this includes an intersectional perspective that takes into account how different forms of social disadvantage and/or privilege intersect. Whether someone grew up in poverty, is a person of color, had a strongly religious upbringing, is queer, has a history of migration, was socialized as female or male, or is chronically ill or neurodivergent — all of this influences a person, their path through life and the context that shapes their sexual development.

My particular focus is on working with members of the LGBTQIA+ community and people in alternative relationship structures, such as open relationships, polyamory and relationship anarchy. In counseling and therapy, many of them sometimes run into a lack of knowledge, or even feel pressured to explain that their challenges have nothing to do with their queerness or their relationship structure. As a queer cis woman, I'm polyamorous myself, so I bring both professional and personal experience in these areas. In my sessions, clients don't have to justify or explain themselves, because I meet them as equals and see them as the experts on their own lived experience.
